Friday 26th June saw a very successful PTFA School Fair take place. The event was very well attended due to the fabulous weather and approximately £3,000 was raised towards School Funds.
Well known local conservationist 'Crocodile' Joe McQuade made a welcome return to St. Andrew's on May 7th. He brought with him an assortment of reptiles and snakes which he described and showed to the children from SOCKS. As well as explaining each creature's habitat, Joe explained the evolvement of each animal including that of the scorpion which has been exactly the same for thousands of years and has yet to change. Joe also brought along some favourites from last year including the Blue Tongued Lizard which the children were able to touch. Joe also explained that due to the credit crunch, people were abandoning exotic pets in droves and as a result he has never been busier travelling up and down the country rescueing abandoned animals which he then takes to one of his 3 sites.
He also explained to the children the importance of removing plastic supermarket shopping bags from circulation. This could be extended over time to include the banning of plastic bags for all packaging purposes. Given that the cost of replacing the lethal, almost indestructible plastic bag, with bio-degradable bags is negligable, then you have to ask the question, why do we continue to produce plastic bags? Joe believes the answer is ignorance. He explained to the children that people, and that includes the directors of supermarket chains, are generally unaware of the death and devastation this material creates for animals in the natural world and that he believes that once people have an understanding of the dangers plastic bags create in the natural environment, the change will be inevitable.
